Introduction to the Audit Report

Our student-centered Whole School Sustainability Audit comprises 12 modules which span 4-8 weeks each and engage all the school’s key stakeholders.

Each of the modules involve data collection and analysis, as well as a review of the local context in which the school operates, and each provides authentic opportunities for student engagement and learning. Each module in the report is divided into three sections: context, findings, and recommendations.

Components of a Sustainability Report

Context

We recognise that possibilities for school improvement can often be constrained by the practical realities of the local context in which the school operates - which tend to be beyond the school’s control. Our recommendations take account of that, in fact, a good part of the report is dedicated to the local context of sustainability and the place where your school is located. As such, it’s also a valuable teaching and learning resource for teachers and students.

Findings

A key outcome of our Whole School Sustainability Audit is a substantive report with more than 100 practical recommendations for steps the school can take to reduce its footprint and embed sustainability more comprehensively in the ethos of the school.

Recommendations

The recommendations that we make range from no-cost, low-cost recommendations which students can implement right away on their own, to capital projects that will require Board approval and time frames of six months or more to implement.

Our recommendations also aim to challenge you, the school to be ambitious in your aspirations to be a sustainable community. One of our first clients - Chinese International School in Hong Kong - has since the audit, committed to becoming a zero-carbon and a zero-waste school.

We classify the 100+ audit recommendations into matrices based on cost, impact, and time required to implement.

Post-audit advisory

Following the conclusion of the review, we run an all-day in-person workshop in which the students present their findings to their peers and then engage in creative individual and team exercises to envision the school’s sustainable future. Students also present their findings and their vision to the Board.

The final report includes recommendations for improvement which serve as a guide to achieving the school’s long term sustainability aspirations which may include goals such as becoming a zero-carbon or zero-waste school.
